Gateway United Saturday at the MKO Abiola International Stadium earned her first win of the 2018/2019 Nigeria National League, NNL campaign with a 1-0 win over Rovers FC of Calabar, Bestchoicesports.com.ng understands

In a rain-soaked encounter, the Abeokuta based side threatened when Stephen Adodo charged towards Rovers keeper Agbor Ekoi who misplaced his kick but Solomon James cleared the ball from danger.

Azeez Abdulsalam missed a sitter when his effort in a one-on-one situation with the keeper went off target, the pacy forward was thereafter withdrawn for Godspower Igbah after picking up what looked like a hamstring injury.

Rovers FC responded with a counter attack but goalkeeper Adamu Azeez made a point blank save after a huge let off from the defence.

Chances were later minimal between both teams with Rovers FC going into the break the happier.

Gateway United continued from where they stopped in the first half as Julius Ikechukwu took aim from range off a freekick which went agonisingly wide.

In the 63rd minute, Gateway United were awarded a penalty when Julius Ikechukwu went past two Rovers defender, aimed for a third and was brought down in the area.

Oluwole Johnson proved to be the hero from the spot when he stepped up and riffled a rocket upright.

Godspower Igbah had a late chance to seal the win but couldn’t hit the target from close range.

The win ensured Gateway United now have 5pts and will travel for a date against Nnewi United in Anambra in matchday 8.
