Incumbent President, Ahmad Ahmad has been disqualified from contesting for the Presidency of Confederation of Africa Football, CAF scheduled for March 12, 2021.

CAF has ruled that just two of the five candidates for March’s presidential elections are eligible to vie for the number one football man in the continent – with President Ahmad Ahmad not among them.

The Malagasy has been ‘declared ineligible’ given his five-year FIFA ban, although his camp have slim hopes an ongoing appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) could change this.

Both former Ivory Coast football federation president Jacques Anouma and current Senegal FA president Augustin Senghor have been authorised to contest the March elections in Morocco.

Further checks are required before either Mauritania FA president Ahmed Yahya and Patrice Motsepe, the South African who owns Mamelodi Sundowns, can be added to the list of candidates.

“The committee considered that further checks are necessary before a final decision,” a CAF statement said. “To this end, a hearing of these candidates will be organised in Cairo on 28 January.”

The committee also authorised a total of 13 candidates to take part in the elections for the Executive Committee, with a further three needing additional verifications.

In addition the four candidates for the FIFA Council are subject to eligibility checks carried out by football’s world governing body and those decisions will be announced in due course.

The final list of candidates eligible for the various ballots will be made public no later than Monday 11 January 2021.

The CAF Governance Committee met on 5 and 6 January 2021 to study the applications for the positions of CAF President, members of the CAF Executive Committee and African members of the FIFA Council.

The electoral process was launched on 10 September 2020 after the Executive Committee meeting held by videoconference, in accordance with CAF statutes. It concerns key positions, for which the complete list is attached hereto.

By 12 November 2020, the last day of submission of candidatures, CAF General Secretariat had received five candidatures for the post of CAF President. It will therefore be up to the Governance Committee, an independent body of CAF chaired by Ivorian Michel Brizoua-Bi, to examine the eligibility of candidates who submitted their applications on time.

After the publication of the list of eligible candidates, the electoral process will therefore reach its peak on 12 March 2021, in the 43rd CAF Elective General Assembly scheduled in Morocco.
