The Confederation of Africa Football, CAF have approved the newly constructed 60, 000 capacity Olembe Stadium to host the final match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations AFCON, www bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.

The final will hold on February 6, 2022

The approval was granted after the continent’s football body lifted ban placed on the stadium following a stamped last week that led to the loss of eight persons.

Stamped occurred at the stadium’s entrance during Cameroon vs Comoros Round of 16 clash. CAF consequently suspended the stadium from hosting further matches untill investigations were carried out on the causes of the melee.

CAF on Sunday received the Stadium stamped report from its Safety and Security Department with CAF also stating that the Stadium would host one of the semi-final matches slated for Wednesday and Thursday this week

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, along with AFCON Organising Committee, received the report compiled by CAF Safety and Security Department together with COCAN relating to the circumstances in regard to the tragedy that occurred at the Olembé Stadium.

The report highlighted the extensive onsite meetings and discussions which were held with senior representatives of the police, the gendarmerie, the military, together with high-ranking Cameroonian Government, Defence, and Police Ministers inclusive of the Governor of Yaoundé and other stakeholders.

The report dealt with and highlighted the tragic circumstances which led to thirty-eight people being injured and eight fatalities.

The report further highlighted the recommendations and interventions to ensure that a tragedy of this nature should never be repeated.

“Having noted the recommendations and undertakings from Government in regard to additional security provisions over and above those which were already successfully implemented at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium during the Morocco and Malawi match and at the Japoma Stadium during the Gambia and Cameroon match, the CAF Organising Committee unanimously agreed to lift the suspension imposed on the Olembé, Stadium and allow one of the Total Energies AFCON Cup of Nations Semi-Finals as well as the Final Match to take place at the Olembé Stadium,” CAF said on Sunday.

“In conclusion, CAF, the Local Organising Committee and the Government of Cameroon having significantly increased security and resources at the Olembé Stadium, are confident that the safety and security of spectators and visitors will be assured,” state statement concluded.

Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Egypt and Senegal are the four teams left in the continental showpiece.

2019 finalists, Senegal and 2013 finalists, Burkina Faso will face off in the first semi-final clash on Wednesday at the Olembe Stadium

Five-time champions, Cameroon taking of Seven-time winners, Egypt in the second Semi-final on Thursday at the Japoma Stadium.
