Africa’s football umpire the Confederation of Africa Football, CAF has disclosed that the prize money for the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON would be reviewed upward, bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe disclosed this during a press conference at Mohamed VI Sports Complex in Sale, Morocco after the conclusion of CAF Executive Committee meeting that was held on Friday, 16 July 2021.

“Regarding prize money for our competitions, we should increase that so as to make our competitions more competitive in the future,” Motsepe said.

“We have to take urgent steps to deal with the financial challenges we are facing. I am positive that our objective will be achieved.

“I attended UEFA and CONCACAF congresses to identify some of the steps we should take to make sure African football is at its best.”

On the report of audit of CAF by the PricewaterhouseCoopers, PWC, Mr Motsepe noted that CAF is undergoing a process to recruit capable hands financial stability, transparency and global competitiveness of Africa football.

“We received PWC final report, and there was an emphasis on the new CAF management adherence to the best practices in terms of financial, governance and managerial aspects.

“PWC report emphasizes our commitment that CAF is an organization which needs partnership with the private sector through the Member Associations and zones to make sure that our football administration is globally competitive.

“There is an ongoing process of employing new and efficient people to make CAF globally competitive.”

CAF confirmed in April 2019 that a total of $14.2 million would be shared between the best eight teams at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in the form of prize money.

If a team gets knocked out from the quarter-final, such a country will be rewarded with $800,000.

The beaten semi-finalists who contest the third-place play-off will share $4m, with each getting $2m.

The 2019 Afcon final is a $7m game and the winners were paid $4.5m with the runners-up pocketing $2.5m.

In the 2019 edition of the competition in Egypt, winners, Algeria went home with the sum of $4.5 million while runners up, Senegal pocketed $2.5 million dollars.

Nigeria who won bronze took home $2 million same as Tunisia who finished 4th.

The other 4 quarterfinalists were rewarded with $800, 000 each.

A total of $14.2 million were shared during the 32nd edition of AFCON in Egypt two years ago.
