EPL champions, Manchester City will head into the new 2019/20 season with a title after they beat Champions League holders, Liverpool 5-4 on penalties to lift the FA Community Shield on Sunday evening to have bragging rights over their rivals.

Raheem Sterling’s 12th-minute goal gave the reigning English Premier League Champions a deserved lead against last season’s runners up, but Joel Matip equalized with less than a quarter an hour left to send the match into penalties.

City’s perfect start

City showed their intentions immediately after kickoff and threatened in the third minute when Bernado Silva went on a solo run, only for him to get blocked without creating a clear chance.

A minute later Leroy Sane got a perfect chance to put City in front, but his shot from inside the box, after running onto Sterling’s ball, went wide.

Liverpool created a chance of their own in the eighth minute, with Salah, who was unmarked inside the box skimming his shot just past the right post.

City were on the attack on almost every minute of the opening 10 minutes and scored a fantastic team goal after David Silva set Sterling free in the area, and he made no mistake with a cool finish into the left side of the net.

The Champions were forced to make a change almost immediately, with Sane unable to continue after picking an injury, with Gabriel Jesus replacing the German.

Allison was once again called into action in the 17th minute, this time saving Sterling’s weak attempt. There was little action in the remaining minutes of the first half, and City went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

Liverpool’s half

The champions picked the second half from where they finished the first and came close to scoring a second in the 49th minute when Sterling once again found some space and released a ferocious shot which went off the right post.

Liverpool too came close to equalizing, with Virgil Van Dijk’s shot after a corner kick crashing against the bar.

Liverpool came back knocking again a minute later, this time Salah creating a good chance for himself and going for goal from midrange, but his shot deflected off the right post.

The Egyptian went close once again in the 69th minute, but his low shot that was going in through the bottom right corner was brilliantly saved by Claudio Bravo.

The Reds, however, could not be denied in the 77th minute when Virgil Van Dijk’s ball was cleverly met by Joel Matip, who easily nodded the ball into an empty net for a 1-1 scoreline.

Bravo saves

Guinea international Naby Keita almost doubled their score in the 83rd minute, but his powerful volley from midrange was brilliantly saved by Bravo.

Liverpool went on the onslaught once again and Bravo was called into action in the 88th minute, brilliantly saving from Salah.

Bravo once again proved City’s hero for the day, denying Xherdan Shaqiri deep into injury time, after he made some space inside the box to unleash a quick shot.

With both teams tied at the final whistle, the match had to be decided on penalties, with Giorgio Wijnaldum missing his kick for Liverpool, while Ilkay Gundogan, Bernado Silva, Foden, Zinchenko, and Gabriel Jesus all finding the net.
