There had been confusion over the date for the traditional curtain-raiser to the new English season after online searches suggested the game would take place on August 1 (a Thursday) but the FA confrimed that the fixture is scheduled for August 4th.

The annual Wembley fixture usually pits the Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners but given that Manchester City won both last season, league runners-up Liverpool, who finished just a single point behind them with a club record 97 point haul, will provide their opponents.

Also confirmed by the FA Saturday was the date for next year’s Emirates FA Cup final, Saturday 23rd May.
