Followers and lovers of Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL may have to wait for more months before they could watch their various clubs slug it in the field of play.

This is because the 2020/2021 NPFL season which has suffered several postponements will not resume this year, after all

An unimpeachable source who spoke to our correspondent this weekend said that the odds against the commencement of the league in the last month of the year are huge and appear difficult currently.

The source who spoke in confidence told our correspondent that the commencement of the league could be delayed for a longer period of time.

The source noted the challenges facing the resumption of the league to include clubs’ inability to finalise their registration and licensing procedures as well as the Annual General Meeting, AGM yet to hold.

“The league cannot resume this year,” the source stated emphatically.

“The outsiders may not understand the situation at hand. It is true that we are trying to fix things and make the league attain professional status by ensuring that clubs conclude the licensing and registration procedures.

“As I speak with you, some clubs have not finished this.

“Secondly, do not forget that the honourable minister of sports made it mandatory that clubs must comply with the club licensing procedure before the league must commence.

“I understand that the minister wrote all the governors whose clubs are playing in the league to tell them that without carrying out the licensing procedure, the league will not commence. So this is a serious issue now.

“Another issue is the fact that there are things to sort out with the league sponsor, Redstrike which bothers on broadcasting of matches

“Outside these, the Annual General Meeting, AGM of the league owners and managers have not been held and the league cannot start without the AGM,” he said.

The source further hinted that no concrete date have been picked for the resumption of the league until the AGM is held before the league body will announce the date

The source added that another factor in the league is ‘Christmas break’ which is factored into the league programme.

“Even if the league will commence next weekend, will it be wise to start matchday one and then ask the clubs to go on a two-week Christmas break?” The source ask.
