RNAS Culdrose ladies which was only able to field eight players were on the wrong end of the hammering as they crashed to defeat at home to local rivals Helston recently in the Pirate FM Cornwall Women’s League, Bestchoicesports.com.ng understands

It has been a tough season for Culdrose which has lost a number of players posted elsewhere and in their 11 games they have conceded 177 goals and scored just three, with their only win coming from a “walkover”.

But despite the mismatch Helston’s joint manager Charlotte Bond who scored twice herself said their opponents still enjoyed the game. “They were all still smiling at the end despite the scoreline and all credit to them” she said.

“The game was played in good spirit and the score did not reflect the attitude of Culdrose who have lost a number of players, but kept on battling.

“There was no mickey-taking “

It was only 4-0 after 20 minutes but 18-0 at half time.

And Charlotte admitted the Helston team were in too low a league.

Only formed in the summer Helston had to appeal to the FA to earn a place in the League despite having many players who have competed at a higher level.

“We were not allowed to play in a higher league but hopefully we can win promotion,” added Charlotte.

In the summer other members of the league had voted 7-4 against the side’s late admission into the league but Helston won an FA appeal against the decision, allowing them to compete.

Culdrose coach Ciaran Nash has just been awarded the FA Manager of the Month award for his work with the team and has inspired the team to keep going despite all the difficulties.

He said: ” I am shocked to have won, but it’s a great honour. It is mainly down to the girls showing up every week, working hard and training regularly.

“Lots of people on the squadron ask about the matches and we are gathering more support as the results are slowly getting better.

“The team are improving every day and I am really proud of them.”

The Falmouth and Helston League was an English association football league comprising clubs from South Cornwall.
