On 8th August, 2021, Bayelsa United broke existing 20 years history when the Nigeria National League, NNL side surmounted all odds to emerge winners of the Aiteo/FA Cup after defeating Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL side, Nasarawa United in Benin City
However the NNL campaigners could not defend their crown this year as they have been bundled out of the oldest competition in the country following a 4-5 penalty loss to fellow NNL side, Green Beret FC
In the Round of 32 fixture played at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus , UNEC Stadium, Enugu on Wednesday, both sides were unable to fined the net in the regulation time as the match proceeded into penalty shootout at final whistle
This time, luck was no longer on the side of the Yenagoa-based club – they defeated Nasarawa United via penalty shootout- as they could not convert all their chances thereby handing Green Beret FC the victory.
Bayelsa United lost two of their spot kicks while Green Beret lost once. With the result, Green Beret FC have progressed to the Round of 16 where they will await their next opponents after the conclusion of Round of 32 matches today.
