Anambra State team was given a shocking reminder that Cricket story in Nigeria has changed. Lagos gave Anambra the bitter lesson in the first group match at Edo Boys High School cricket pitch on Monday 22 March 2021.
Lagos took out all 9 wickets in trembling quick session of 1 wicket per over and all out with 17 runs only.
“Today wasn’t a good day for us and we hope to play better in the next game tomorrow.” Okoye Donald promised.
The big tragedy was Anambra featuring Nigeria’s one time best batsman, all rounder (batting, bowler and wicket keeper) and national captain, Chimezie Owunuri.
The Lagos team incidentally with the current national team captain, Joshua Ayunaike and Daniel finished the game for Lagos without a sweat.
For Ayunaike who won the toss but needed to understudy Edo Boys High School pitch, “it was the right thing for us to check the ground as a lot of our boys are playing here for the first time. It was a good ground and the game was a good one we were lucky we could finish it up early and rest for tomorrow’s game.”
The second match was more of a fight compared to first where host Edo State defeated Kwara State by 7 wickets.
Peter Aho was man of the match for taking 3 wickets while his younger team mate Selim Salau batted 31 runs not out from 46 balls.
The men’s Championship continue tomorrow at Edo Boys High School ground where most of the team will slug it out come April in the national sports festival hosted by Edo State.
