NPFL MD 33: Rivers United Seek To Drown Akwa United Title Hopes As Adamawa United Battle Sunshine In Relegation Fight
By Amaechi Agbo
Akwa United need a maximum of 13 points to be declared champions of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL season but they face an uphill task as they clash with Rivers United in the Port Harcourt monkey waters on Sunday.
It is a battle of 3rd vs 1st as the Pride of Rivers will take on the Promise Keepers in a decisive clash that a win or loss would be injurious to either team not favoured by the result.
Akwa United last week opened a 5-point gap at the log with closest rivals, Nasarawa United, Kano Pillars and Rivers United all tied on 55 points.
A win for Akwa United could see them closer to actualising their dreams but a defeat would be a massive blow for the Akwa Ibom boys and would ultimately blow the title race wide open.
In other encounters scheduled for this Sunday, 20th placed Adamawa United will have their house handy when they host Sunshine Stars of Akure in a relegation battle.
Wikki Tourists of Bauchi and Abia Warriors 15 and 14th on the table respectively with 38 and 36 points will square up in another epic clash that three points to either side would be critical.
In other matches, Enyimba will play host to Jigawa Golden Stars while Nasarawa United will entertain MFM FC in Lafia.
Plateau United will play FC Ifeanyi Ubah in Jos, just as Warri Wolves will take on Kwara United.
Katsina United will battle Lobi Stars while Rangers will be guests to Heartland FC in Owerri in an Oreintal Derby.
Kano Pillars will seek to return to winning ways when they take on Dakkada FC in Kaduna.
All matches will kick-off by 4pm
