Super Eagles striker and Napoli of Italy hero, Victor Osimhen has won the Best Africa International Football Award in Ghana on Sunday

The 24-year-old Italian Serie A Golden Boot winners clinched the award in Ghana after seeing off competition from Liverpool star, Mohammed Salah and Manchester City winger, Riyad Mahrez, both of who are past Africa Footballer of the Year winners.

It’s the first time Osimhen will be winning the award.

The 24-year-old had a remarkable 2022/23 season for Serie A champions, Napoli.

The Nigeria international was top scorer in Serie A with 26 goals and was also named best striker in the top-flight.

Osimhen who is currently holidaying in Nigeria after the conclusion of the Italian Serie A season, expressed gladness over the award. He thanked the organisers and fans for their support in a short video he made on social media.

“Hello everyone I’m Victor Osimhen, SSC Napoli striker. It’s a great privilege for me to win this award, it’s really a great honour.

“Thank you to those who voted for me and their support and major thanks to the organisers, Ghana Football Award for their love and support also I appreciate you for this recognition I’ll keep making Africa proud.

“Thank you all and God bless you.”

Osimhen helped Napoli win the 2033 Italian Serie A league title, their first since 1990.

Also he emerged top scorer with 26 goals, and became the first-ever African footballer in the leagues history to win the Golden Boot in the Italian topflight.

In the course of the season, he was named Best Foreign Athlete in Italy.

Osimhen scored a brace on June as Super Eagles defeated Sierra Leone 3-2 in Monrovia to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON to be hosted by Cote D’Ivoire in January next year.
