Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned Ligue 1 champions for a ninth time following a ruling by the LFP on Thursday to cancel the 2019/2020 season, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report

It was confirmed on Tuesday that games in France would be unable to take place until September after a decree by the Prime Minister.

PSG had a comfortable 12-point lead over second-placed Olympique de Marseille when the season was suspended with 10 games left as part of French government’s measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus last month.

With some clubs having played 27 games and others 28, the LFP drew the standings according to a performance index – the number of points per game weighed by head-to-head record.

PSG therefore ended the season on 2.52 points with OM on 2 and third-placed Stade Rennais on 1.79.

With Uefa insisting that domestic competitions be completed by August, the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season was essentially voided.

And now the LFP have also confirmed that Thomas Tuchel’s side have been named as champions after just 27 games.

PSG finished the season with 68 points, winning 22 matches in total.

It has also been confirmed that the current league standings are also the final standings, meaning Stade Rennes and Marseille have qualified for the Champions League, while Lille, Nice and Reims make the Europa League

Amiens and Toulouse have been relegated to Ligue 2, while Lorient have been promoted from the second tier to Ligue 1.

LFP president Didier Quillot has also stated that next season – 2020/21 – will aim to start by late August.

“Our objective is to start the season 20/21 in August – at the latest August 22/23. The date will be decided in consultation with the broadcasters.

“If authorised to play behind closed doors, there is a possibility of playing the relevant Cup finals in August too.”

If Saint Étienne or Lyon win their cup finals – both play PSG – then they will qualify for the Europa League in place of Nice or Reims.
