South Africa have turned down an approach by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) to step in to host the 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nations, instead says it is focusing on bidding for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup host bid, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.
The approach came after hosts Congo pulled out of the hosting of the 12-team tournament in July with CAF now in a race against time to find a country to hold the tournament.
South Africa FA new acting chief executive officer Gay Mokoena while talking to the BBC said: “We are not going to express an interest on this. We are instead trying to focus our efforts on the 2023 women’s World Cup. I will write to CAF to advise them that we will not express any interest to host this tournament.”
CAF is set to issue another formal tender to prospective bidders for the hosting of the tournament, one of the many decisions made by their executive committee at their meeting in Cairo on Thursday.
South Africa has a deadline of December 13 to put provide their arrangements and plans to host the 2020 World Cup; the African nation being one of the seven nations that has expressed interest in hosting the event.With the AWCON hosting delays, CAF Is yet to decide on the dates for next year’s showpiece that is always held in the second half of the year.
