Super Eagles 2022 World Cup qualifiers slated for June against Liberia and Cape Verde have been postponed, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.

Nigeria was due to start her Qatar 2022 World Campaign on June 5th with a home match against Liberia and an away game against Cape Verde six days later.

However, the matches have been postponed to September.

Africa’s football umpire, Confederation of Africa Football, CAF in announcing the postponement on Thursday said the need to shift the matches was as result of ravaging Covid-19 pandemic in the continent.

“The CAF Emergency Committee, in consultation with FIFA, decided to postpone the CAF qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 that were due to be played in June 2021 after taking into consideration the current challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to ensure the optimal playing conditions for all participating teams,” CAF said in official statement.

The qualifiers will now take place in the existing windows of September, October and November 2021, and March 2022.

“CAF is reassessing its protocols and processes to enhance the implementation of COVID-related protocols, including specifically focusing on pre-match testing which had been the source of some challenges in previous windows,” the statement continued

The coach Gernot Rohr-led Eagles are drawn against Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia in Group C of the qualifiers.

Since qualifying for her maiden World Cup in USA 1994, Super Eagles have played all but one edition of the completion. The team missed out in 2006 edition held in Germany.

Nigeria lost the qualifying ticket to Angola.
