The crisis rocking Nigeria Football Federation, NFF and Coach Thomas Dennerby took a worse dimension Tuesday evening when the federation and the acting coach of the Super Falcons, in total disrespect to the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare who had waded into the matter with a view to resolving them.

But in what could be regarded as a ‘coup’ ostensibly to discredit Mr Dennerby, the acting coach of the team, Christopher Danguma, barely 48 hours after he assumed position, on Tuesday evening, hurriedly named former assistant captain, Asisat Oshoala as the substantive captain of the side.

Mr Danjuma in a video posted by the Super Falcons handlers on their twitter handle announced the change in leadership of the team to a shell shocked players after their training Tuesday evening.

The development could be a setback to the move by the honourable minister who had promised, after speaking with both NFF and Mr Dennerby parties, to broker peace between them.

The announcement could also be a ploy to ensure that whatever plans the honourable minister has towards making peace did not come to limelight since it was made same day the minister visited the team earlier in the morning.

“This morning (Tuesday, September 17) I visited the super falcons during their training at the Moshood Abiola Stadium Abuja. I gave inspiring words and assured them that the government will ensure their welfare. I told them Nigerians will expect only victories in their remaining qualifiers,” the minister posted his twitter handle.

On Monday, determined to broker peace, the minister had telephone conversation with Thomas Dennerby and also summoned the NFF for a meeting with a view to letting sleeping dog lie.

“An hour ago I had a constructive conversation on the telephone with Super Falcons Coach Dennerby in Sweden. I have also spoken with the NFF leadership. We are working to resolve the issues in the interest of football development,” he said on Monday.

If truly the handlers of the Super Falcons are genuine in pursuing national interest, why the hurried announcement of Asisat Oshoala as the new captain? Why take such a far reaching decision when the minister had intervened in the matter? Whose interest and agenda are the Super Falcons handlers, particularly the NFF Women Football Department championing?

Only time and tide will provide answers to these queries.
