Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed delight after he bagged a crucial goal for loan club, Mainz, in Sunday’s Bundesliga clash against FC Koln becoming the first Nigerian to score COVID-19 goal in Europe.

The Liverpool player is thrilled to score his first goal for FSV Mainz following Sunday’s 2-2 away draw at Cologne.

The hosts, who paraded Nigeria defender Kingsley Ehizibue in the entertaining encounter, went 2-0 up courtesy of goals from Mark Uth and Florian Kainz.

Awoniyi came off the bench in the 56th minute for his seventh league appearance of the campaign.

He reduced the deficit five minutes later, slotting the ball home following a cutback by Ridle Baku.

Cameroon midfielder Pierre Kunde restored parity for the visitors in the 72nd minute.

“I’m really happy about scoring my first goal for Mainz. We came back very well as a team today and fought our way back into the match,” Awoniyi told reporters after the game.

Mainz will host Hoffeinham in their next league game on Saturday.
