Speaking after the opening match of the Principals Cup in Lagos Friday, the minister who described the competition as the “nursery of our football”, noted that the past decades without the competition has affected the development of the round leather in the country.
Writing in his official Twitter handle on Saturday morning, Mr Dare who was cospicously elevated over the resurrection of the competition that have produced tens of legends for Nigeria football, thanked the federal government, minister of Education and school Pñprincipals for their support and partnership in revitalising the grassroots sport.
“Yesterday, a chapter in Nigeria’s football development came alive – the return of the Principals’ Cup.
“At the Agege stadium Lagos, FG under the Sports Ministry took the bold step to re-start the Principals Cup abandoned decades ago.
“The opening match between Government College, Kaduna and Igbobi College, Lagos saw the display of raw talents and football artistry.
It elicited excitement and brought back nostalgic feelings. Nigeria’s football Nursery is again re-born. MYSD thanks School Principals – Partners,” Mr Dare tweeted.
The minister noted that importance of combining education and sports for attainment of one’s career is very significant.
“I am glad that young secondary school students from across the country can showcase their talents in football, Table Tennis, Athletics, VolleyBall and Basket Ball.
“The blend of Education with Sports remains a cardinal goal. We thank the Ministry of Education for partnering with us on this journey.”
In the opening match played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Igbobi College, Lagos forced their visitors, Government College, Kaduna to a 1 – 1 draw.
Emmanuel Peter scored in the 29th minute to give the team from Kaduna the lead but their Hameed Gafar’s second half goal ensured that the spoil was evenly shared.
