The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN has disclosed that Nigeria Olympic-bound athletes are not ready for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan in July this year, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.

The Technical Director, AFN, Mr Sunday Adeleye stated this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent over the weekend.

Mr Adeleye said Nigerian athletes are not ready for the global summer Olympics scheduled to commence in five months due largely to the fact the federation as well as the athletes have not received support from the federal government for effective preparations.

“Without mincing words, we are not ready. Why? Because our level of preparedness has not been up to date. The athletes have been under-funded or not even funded to prepare for these games.

“In other part of the world where people prepare for Olympics, they get support of their governments to prepare for Olympics but in our own case, athletes have not gotten any support from the government that would help them prepare.

“Of course, they have bills to pay, they pay their trainers, they pay for gyms, they pay for where they train, their foods, and supplement and so on. If they have not been able to take care of those things even for the houses they live,” he said
