As the 33rd edition of Africa’s glamorous football showpiece, the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON takes centre stage in Cameroon from tomorrow, Sunday, January 9 through February 6, 2022, teams are intensifying training and strategy ahead of the competition

With 24 teams set to battle it out for the quest to be crowned the next Africa football kings, below are news in brief concerning some teams in the competition and the host nation.

1.The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated CAF Champions League campaigners Coton Sport of Garoua two-nil on Friday in a practice match that interim coach Augustine Eguavoen was impressed with the team’s performance

Goals from Ahmed Musa and Samuel Chukwueze gave the Nigerian Super Eagles a two-nil win, this is the first warm-up game for the 3-time winners who are drawn in group D along with 7-time winners Egypt, 1970 champions Sudan and Djurtus of Guinea Bissau.

The Super Eagles will battle Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday in Group D opener

2. The Al-Murabitun of Mauritania have landed in Limbe, Cameroon. They landed on Friday.

Mauritania, 2004 winners Tunisia, the Eagles of Mali and Nzalang Nationale of Equatorial Guinea are in group F based in Limbe.

3. The Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire have had their first training session in Douala.

The 2015 winners who arrived on Thursday had their first training session on Friday. Coach Patrice Beaumelle was in high spirits during the team’s training session at the Reunification Stadium.

4. AFCON Opening Match: Camerron governor offers free rides to fans to Olembe Stadium

From Yaounde comes this report that the Governor of Cameroon’s Central Province Naseri Paul Bea has offered football fans free rides on match day to the Olembe Stadium, Yaounde.

The Governor says this is to enable fans to throng the stadium when the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon take on the Stallions of Burkina Faso

5. The Head Coach of the Teranga Lions, Aliou Cisse, says that they have just one business in Cameroon TO WIN the 33rd AFCON.

6. The City Mayor of Limbe, Andrew Motanga Mojimba is no more.

Andrew Motanga Mojimba died in Douala after battling with the illness for several weeks.

Sources say he has been battling with the illness for a long time and was even evacuated last year.

His situation has paralysed some activities at the Limbe City Council with Councillors unable to hold their sessions.
