Ex Super Eagles handler, Gernot Rohr has signed a three-year contract with the Benin Football Association as the nation’s senior national team, The Cheetahs head coach

Rohr’s new appointment since he was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation in December 2021 is his 5th African nations he is handling Wich his major assignment being the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualification

The German replaced Moussa Latoundji, who was on caretaker capacity following the sacking of Frenchman Michel Dussuyer after the Cheetahs missed out in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Prior to his latest appointment, Rohr has previously managed four other African nations including Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.

The Franco German who had 35 victories out of 64 games as Super Eagles gaffer, said his new appointment is a “real challenge”

“I signed a three-year contract with the Beninese Football Association.

“It’s an interesting mission to rebuild the team with younger players

“I will be in Cotonou soon to prepare the next match against Rwanda.

“It’s a real challenge that I have accepted. We have to try and get something to revive the team.”

The 69 years old’s first assignment with the Cheetahs is a Group L 2023 AFCON qualifier against Rwanda. The Cheetahs of Benin and Amavubi of Rwanda clash will take place at the Stade de l’Amitie in Cotonou on March 22.

Benin are currently bottom of Group L after two defeats in their opening two games. Senegal leads the group with six points, while Mozambique occupies second spot with four points. Rwanda are third with one point.

Rohr recorded 35 wins and 16 draws in 64 games while on the Nigerian technical bench for five years, before he was sacked in December 2021.
