Chelsea triumphed over Brighton & Hove Albion in a breathtaking 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, recording a memorable victory in their first home match of the 2026–27 Premier League season under new coach, Xabi Alonso

It was back-to-back triumphs for the Blues in the league after their week one victory against Fulham as the go 3^rd on the log after Week two in the new season.

Spearheaded by new manager Xabi Alonso, the Blues rode a devastating first-half counter-attacking showcase to withstand a furious late comeback attempt from the Seagulls. The clash exploded into life just four minutes after the opening whistle. Chelsea’s Roméo Lavia pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area following a chaotic corner routine, prodding it past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to secure his first-ever goal for the club and ignite the home crowd.

Before Brighton could regain their composure, Chelsea struck again. In the 14th minute, Morgan Rogers orchestrated a swift transition down the flank, sliding a perfectly weighted cross to Pedro Neto, who timed his run beautifully to sweep it home for a rapid 2-0 cushion.

Brighton tried to assert control through heavy possession, but Chelsea’s defensive shape remained clinical. The advantage widened to 3-0 in the 32nd minute when left-back Jorrel Hato picked out João Pedro following an interception by Malo Gusto. The forward finished with absolute composure against his former team.

Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton side finally found a lifeline just three minutes later. Chelsea debutant Emiliano Martínez made a sprawling initial save, but Malick Yalcouyé reacted fastest to hammer the rebound into the roof of the net, narrowing the deficit to 3-1 ahead of the break. The second half saw Brighton dictate play, starving Chelsea of the ball and asking continuous questions of the Blues’ backline.

Chelsea missed a golden opportunity to fully seal the points around the hour mark when Cole Palmer fired over from close range, and that error quickly cost them. In the 62nd minute, a dangerous Brighton ball delivered into the area resulted in an unfortunate own goal by João Pedro, trimming the scoreline to a tense 3-2. With momentum shifting rapidly, it was England international Cole Palmer who restored order for the West Londoners.

In the 74th minute, Chelsea mounted another clinical breakaway. Palmer collected a short pass on the fringe of the area and curled a spectacular, trademark finish into the bottom corner to make it 4-2. Alonso immediately turned to his bench, introducing defensive reinforcements like Reece James and Moisés Caicedo to protect the lead. Still, a resilient Brighton refused to go quietly into the afternoon.

Deep into added time—in the 95th minute—the visitors earned a corner kick. The ball broke to veteran midfielder Pascal Groß, who blasted a powerful strike through a crowded penalty box and past Martínez.

At 4-3, the final minute was a pure test of nerves. Brighton threw everyone forward, but center-backs Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill repelled successive aerial balls until the referee finally blew the full-time whistle, confirming a chaotic, seven-goal masterpiece at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are 3rd on the Premier League table with 6 points, separated by goal difference between Manchester City and surprise package, Hull City who are first and second in that order. The table however may change on Monday if Arsenal beat Aston Villa in their Monday Night clash
