Under the watchful and emotional eyes of his mother in the stands, goalkeeper Vozinha anchored Cape Verde to an incredible 2-2 draw against two-time champions , Uruguay at the Miami Stadium on Sunday night.

The result sends a shockwave through Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and cements the Blue Sharks’ status as the tournament’s ultimate fairytales.

Just six days ago, the 40-year-old Vozinha was reduced to tears during a post-match interview. Despite winning Player of the Match in a historic 0-0 draw against Spain, he wept because his mother, Ana Candida Evora, was stuck in Cape Verde.

Steeped in high travel costs and initial bureaucratic hurdles, she had been unable to secure a U.S. visa in time.

A viral crowdfunding campaign rapidly raised travel funds. High-profile political figures, including U.S. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, stepped in to help fast-track the paperwork.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino even welcomed Evora personally upon her arrival in Florida. Draped in the Cape Verdean flag, Evora took her place among the 64,003 fans on Father’s Day, telling reporters through nerves that she felt immense pride for her son and the entire nation.

Inspired by his mother’s presence, Vozinha and Cape Verde stood toe-to-toe with the South American giants. Midfielder Kevin Pina struck a sensational, 34-yard direct free-kick to score Cape Verde’s first-ever goal in World Cup history.

However, Uruguay struck back just before halftime. Maximiliano Araújo capitalized on a rebound to head home an equalizer, followed by Agustín Canobbio thrusting the La Celeste ahead during first-half stoppage time.

Refusing to back down, Cape Verde pressed on. Hélio Varela took full advantage of an aggregate defensive blunder by the Uruguayan backline, sliding the ball into the net to make it 2-2. Despite furious late pressure from Uruguayan substitutes like Darwin Núñez, Vozinha commanded his box perfectly to see out the draw.

The hard-fought draw leaves both Cape Verde and Uruguay deadlocked with two points each after two games. Spain leads the pack with four points.

The Blue Sharks will look to complete their miraculous push for the Round of 32 when they square off against Saudi Arabia on June 26, while Uruguay faces a must-win blockbuster against Spain.

For Vozinha and his mother, however, the tournament has already delivered a victory that transcends football.
