The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Sunday failed to secure an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after a stunning 1-0 defeat against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco
The highly anticipated match took place on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco. A 19th-minute strike by Cameroon’s Nyadjou proved to be the decisive blow, shattering the Super Falcons’ hopes of a direct path to Brazil in serious jeopardy
Despite a relentless second-half push led by veteran forward Asisat Oshoala and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Nigeria could not break down Cameroon’s disciplined defensive line. The defeat marks a historic low for the 10-time African champions, who entered the tournament as defending champions.
With this result, the Super Falcons’ legendary streak of appearing in every single FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991 is now over.
Nigeria’s qualification campaign was rocky from the start. Head coach Justin Madugu’s side suffered a shocking 3-2 group-stage defeat to debutants Malawi. Although the team bounced back with a 1-0 win over Zambia and a dominant 6-2 thrashing of Egypt, their defensive vulnerabilities ultimately caught up with them in the knockout rounds.
While Nigeria missed out on the automatic qualification handed to the four WAFCON semifinalists—a privilege already claimed by Cameroon, Algeria, and Morocco—their World Cup dreams are not completely dead. The Super Falcons will now drop into the African playoff bracket. They must face one of the other defeated quarterfinalists on August 13.
A victory there will keep them in contention, sending them to the high-stakes Inter-Confederation Playoffs for a final chance to board the plane to Brazil.
Africa has four automatic slots for the 2027 World Cup and still has two places to fill through the intercontinental playoff.
Nigeria will qualify for the play off if she wins the Semi-final playoff that will involve the four quarter-finalists at the ongoing WAFCON
