Abuja, Nigeria – Despite facing intense pressure and widespread calls for resignation, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board led by Ibrahim Gusau has taken drastic measures by sacking Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu alongside his entire technical crew.

The sweeping changes, announced via the official NFF X platform, follow the ten-time African champions’ historic failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Alongside the mass termination, Gusau-led NFF Board formally inaugurated a six-member Fact-finding Committee to probe the systemic failures plaguing the country’s national teams.

The NFF’s decisive actions arrive at a highly volatile moment for the football body’s leadership. Following disappointing outcomes across various national team cadres—compounded by the Super Falcons missing the World Cup for the first time since its 1991 inception—outraged stakeholders and fans across social media have demanded that Gusau and his executive board resign.

Critics argue that the administrative issues, sub-par tournament preparations, and internal team incidents in Morocco are reflections of executive failure rather than purely technical mistakes. The administrative crisis is further intensified by internal controversies rocking the football body ahead of the upcoming NFF Elective Congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Justine Madugu’s dismissal follows a rapid downward spiral for the team. Despite leading Nigeria to a 10th continental title a year prior, Madugu faced severe criticism for his tactical decisions during the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The Falcons’ campaign unraveled completely through two major tournament failures: a historic 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon knocked them out early and denied them an automatic World Cup ticket.

Handed a second chance via the continental playoffs, the team suffered a definitive 2-1 aggregate defeat to South Africa, permanently ending their road to Brazil 2027.

Madugu publicly accepted responsibility and apologized for the performance just days before the NFF Executive Committee demanded the technical crew step down with immediate effect.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” NFF said on X

In an effort to address the crisis, Gusau inaugurated the investigative panel on Monday in Abuja, tasking them with auditing the immediate and underlying problems of the national teams.

“You are to probe into the direct and remote causes of the poor outings of the National Teams in recent times, but with specific reference to the unexpected failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the World Cup,” Gusau announced during the inauguration.

The panel has been handed a strict two-week deadline to gather findings, accept public memoranda, and submit a final report outlining reforms to restore Nigeria’s football dominance.

The high-profile committee is composed of prominent football stakeholders: Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON  (Former NFF General Secretary), Chairman; Desire Oparanozie (Former Super Falcons Captain); Mutiu Adepoju (Former Super Eagles Midfielder); Ladan Bosso  (Former Flying Eagles Coach); Dr. Alex Mana       (Former Referee) and Nasiru Sa’idu          (Chairman, Sokoto State FA), Secretary.

Meanwhile, the NFF has yet to announce any interim or permanent replacements for the vacated Super Falcons coaching positions
