The President’s pronouncement came following years of intractable crises that have hampered the development of basketball in the country.

On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, a group of Nigeria Basketball players led a protest to the ministry of youth and Sports, accusing the sports minister of ineptitude in tackling the problems facing the sport.

Following the unending crises that have plagued and nearly crippled basketball development in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has today approved the immediate withdrawal of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for a period of two years.

This was made known today by the permanent secretary of Federal Ministry Of Youth And Sports Development, Ismaila Abubakar.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF’s crises got to a crescendo in January after two presidents emerged from two parallel elections held in Abuja and Benin City on January 31, 2021.
