The government of the federal Republic of Ghana is committed to ensuring a sustainable sports development for the country in the year 2021 with the establishment of a sports fund.

Ghana’s Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and caretaker Minister for Finance, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, says the government is highly committed to promoting sustainable sports development and addressing the financial challenges in the Sports Sector.

The Budget is expected to chart a clear path for the country towards post-C0VID-19 economic recovery. The budget statement is from the President and normally read on his behalf by the Minister of Finance.

Delivering the 2021 budget statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 12, 2021, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated “ Mr. Speaker, to promote sustainable sports development and to address the financial challenges in the Sports Sector, the Ministry is in the process of establishing a sports fund. This is intended to bridge the funding gap associated with sports development and promotion. ”

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said Ministry will also facilitate the preparation and participation of the National Sports Associations in their respective international commitments focusing on the 2020 Olympic Games to be hosted in Tokyo this year.

“The Ministry will facilitate the qualification and participation of all the National Football Teams in various international tournaments. These include the facilitation of the: Black Stars preparation and qualification to the 2021 African Cup of Nations Tournament in Cameroon, 2022 World Cup Tournament in Qatar, Black Satellites participation in the WAFU Tournament, Black Queens preparation and qualification to the WAFU and the African Women’s Cup of Nations Tournaments, and Black Princesses and Black Maidens to their respective World Cup Qualifiers and Tournaments both in 2021. ”

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was appointed as the caretaker Minister for Finance because the Finance Ministry earlier indicated that Mr. Ofori-Atta had been receiving medical attention in the US after dealing with complications from COVID-19.

In accordance with Articles 179 and 180 of the 1992 Constitution, the government in power is mandated to present a budget to parliament yearly.
