Nigeria To Present 115 Athletes, Officials At 2022 Commonwealth Games

the Federal Government have stated that a total of 115 athletes and officials cut across nine sporting events will represent Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games scheduled to hold in Birmingham, England later this month.

Confirming the number that would constitute Team Nigeria at the quadrennial event on Wednesday, the ministry of youth and sports said the contingent will be made up of 94 athletes and 21 officials.

In a release signed by the Director of press ministry of youth and sports Abuja, Manga Mohammed, it noted that the athletes and officials will represent Nigeria in nine sports which include athletics, boxing, para-athletics, weightlifting, para-table tennis, Para-powerlifting, table tennis, judo and wrestling.

Mr Mohammed also noted that the selected athletes have embarked on closed door camping in three states, stressing that they will depart Nigeria for Bermingham, England staggeredly

“The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development will present 94 athletes and 21 accompany technical personnel that have qualitied through several qualification competitions overseas to carry the banner of our Nation to the Games.

“These competitions as well as the open camping which led to the International events have dovetailed into a close camp for Team Nigeria in the 3 cities of:

“Abuja FCT: Athletics, Boxing, Para Athletics and Weightlifting
Lagos Lagos State: Para Table Tennis, Para Powerlifting, Table Tennis and Judo

“Yenagoa, Bayelsa State: Wrestling

The camps will run up until Team Nigeria’s staggered departures to the Games in Birmingham beginning from 22nd July, 2022.

The release further noted that the athletes who have begun training in their various locations are “in high spirit and desirous of doing our nation proud at the Games.”

“The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has urged the athletes to concentrate in their training and preparations, avoid the use of performance enhancing substances and put up a high level of discipline in order to project a positive image of Nigeria at the Games,” the statement concluded.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will begin on Thursday, 28 July and ends on
Monday, 8 August with 72 countries expected to participate.
