Nigeria legend, Jay Jay Okocha has disclosed that Nigeria football followers do not forgive defenders in the national team when they score an own goal.

The former PSG star stated this during a Bundesliga table chat recently,

The 1996 Olympic gold medal winner while explaining why Nigeria produces more attackers in football than defenders, said the inability of the fans to forgive defenders when they err could be the reason standout defenders don’t emanate from the country.

“If you look at a country like Senegal, I think they have produced more defenders than strikers. So it might have something to do with our genes.

“But also, the fans might also have a hand in it, because we don’t forgive defenders if they score an own goal but we can forgive strikers.” he added.

Ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cote D’voire, the Super eagles are among the favourite teams to clinch the trophy.

Despite parading strikers such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, Gift Orban, Kelechi Iheanacho, Terem Moffi, and Akor Adams, the defence has been fragile and a source of worry for the coaching staff.
