…Fans Call For Coach’s Sack

By Amaechi Agbo

Randy Waldrum, Super Falcons coach, has come under severe attacks and criticisms following the team’s worst performance in an Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON tournament.

Super Falcons campaign at the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco came to a disastrous end on Friday after the nine-time champions succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against fellow World Cup bound opponents, Zambia

Expected to bounce back from their 4-5 penalty shootout loss to host Morocco in the semi-final, Super Falcons played with uncoordinated midfield, insipid attack and lethargic backline.

Although the Zambians defended in numbers, they however took the lead and scored the only goal of the encounter in the 29th minute via an own goal by Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie

The Copper Queens clinched the third position for the first time in their history as the Zambians claimed their first medal in the history of the tournament.

The Queens got the better of the record title holders Nigeria who paid the price for their profligacy and finished outside the top three for the first time in ten years.

And football followers including journalists have called for the sack of the American coach, Randy Waldrum.

The football enthusiasts who noted that the former Physical Education teacher has taken the Nigeria women football back to dark ages, expressed displeasure over the way and manner the team went about their business in Morocco

@OgaNIaMedia said “Super Falcons finish 4th with NUGA coach, Randy Waldrum. Thank you Randy. The man took us from Top to Bottom

“Kadiri Ikhana finished fourth in 2012 with the Super Falcons and he was SACKED. This is the second time, the Super Falcons will be finishing fourth in the Women’s AFCON.”

Falcons lost their semi-final against Morocco

@IkHEOAphilip said “This is officially our worst WAFCON in history, we’ve never finished fourth. Not only did we finish fourth, we lost the most games ever in the history of our WAFCON and conceded the most games goals too.

“This is officially our worst WAFCON. Since 2004 since I started watching the superfalcons this is the worst team I have ever seen, in terms of play and everything. Them go too beat us for world cup walahi. If we carry this PE coach and some crop of players from this team.”

@dant-guerrero “This tournament is a clear example of what happens when you take a PE Teacher as Coach to a tournament. It was clear from the first kick vs South Africa. This one is on Amaju and Randy Orton his guy.

@OlamiUthman “But why can’t the players do their part? Players strategize when they see the game is beyond their coach. The likes of Monday wasting chances upfront. Nkobi holding onto ball for too long. Onumonu still not back to herself from the last match.”

@Theluu01 “But truth be told the Falcons standard has been on a decline since 2018…We practically struggled to lift that cup and our football was not anywhere encouraging.Failed to qualify for the olympics as well.”

@Cybereagles took a different look and laid the blame on the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and sports minister Sunday Dare for failing to pay the players their entitlements

“It is easy to blame the coaches or/and the players but the blame should be directed at Pinnick & the Sports Minister.

“Why are we in 2022 still having issues about paying players money that is due to them?

“Our FA should do their part, then they can blame the players/coach.”

@Segun-Omolaubi said Waldrum underated the WAFCON

“He kept on underating the WAFCON saying our goal is to qualify for the World Cup. He wasn’t thinking of winning the WAFCON and it’s not like we might even pass the group stage of the world cup not to talk of quaterfinals with this kind of performance.

@Phiskyofficial “To be honest, the girls were playing an individual game with no clear tactics from the coach. Just like Man Utd under Ole Gunner. First eleven and insha Allah
The coach is clueless. The ladies are good on a normal day but no tactical approach to bring there (their) best out

Super Falcons campaign was overshadowed by protest over none payment of allowances with sports minister and NFF President trading blames.

@ColinUdoh “We need tp #SackWaldrum NOW
This is the most embarrassed I have felt about the Super Falcons since I started watching them in 1991. We have never been this disgraced

“Waldrum’s tenure has been the WORST of any @NGSuper_Falcons coach EVER!
No other coach has lost more games. And we haven’t even gone to the World Cup yet..
#SackWaldrum NOW”

@edwintimmy took a different stand.  “Na so we talk say Rohr everything scattered… I don’t abide in sacking coach anyhow because of bad tournament

Super Falcons played a total of six matches in the WAFCON 2022 tournament, won three, and lost three. They began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat by South Africa, beat debutants Bostwana and Burundi 2-0 and 4-0 respectively at the group stage, recorded a 1-0 victory against Cameroon before they lost 4-5 on penalty to Morocco in the semi-final.

The third-place match on Friday was the 3rd time both Falcons and the Copper Queens are meeting, the previous two matches ended 4-0 in 2018 and 6-0 in 2014 in favour of the Super Falcons.

This is the second time the team will be finishing 4th in the tournament, the first time, since the competition started in 1991 was 2012 when they finished 4th after losing semi-final and third-place matches 1-0 each against South Africa and Cameroon, in that order.
