Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL champions, Rivers United on Wednesday whitewashed visiting Al Nasr of Lybia 5-0 in the first leg playoff of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Playing at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, the Nigeria champions scored three goals in the first half before rounding off their great day with more two goals in the second forty-five minutes
Ebube Duru scored the opening goal from the spot after Paul Acquah was brought down in the box by Al Nasr’s goalkeeper who got a yellow card for his trouble
Four minutes late, Kazie Enyinnaya doubled the lead for the home side and Paul Acquah got his name on the scoresheet a minute to the end of first half.
After restart, Rivers United almost scored the 4th goal in the 48th minute but Nyima Nwagua’s diving header on Ebube Duru’s Cross comes came off the woodwork to the relief of the Lybian goalkeeper
But the Lybians back was thorn apary again in the 64th minute after they conceded another penalty and Ebube Duru calmly converted to make it 4-0.
A thunderbolt from Malachi Ohawume in the 72nd minute which had the goalkeeper deep-rooted on his spot took the goal tally far beyond the Al Nasr players who could not muster more strength to change the tide.
Rivers United will be on the road next week as they visit Lybia for the return leg on Wednesday, November 9.
The winner of the two-leg encounters will qualify for the group stage of the Africa’s second tier league.
