Finidu George has resigned his post as Super Eagles Coach, with Portuguese coach, Antonio Conceicao a top favorite to replace him, www.bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.

NFF is yet to comment on the development.

Finidi’s resignation comes days after the NFF made it public that it will hire an expertriate to thinker the team.

Super Eagles are currently 5th in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers with 3 points after four matches. Their 2-1 defeat against Benin on Monday came as a shock to many.

Finidi was expected to read his Head Coach role (assistant) under the new foreign Coach but this did not go down well with the former Enyimba FC handler.

“The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologized to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent very poor returns of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, and pledged to work assiduously and put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

“Further to (1) above, the Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches,” NFF said after its Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation NFF plans to appoint Portuguese coach Antonio Conceicao as the new Super Eagles Technical Adviser.

Conceicao, former head coach of Cameroon, showed interest in the role after Jose Peseiro resigned in February. Initially, the NFF chose local coach Finidi George instead.

Conceicao has been out of work since leaving the Cameroon job in 2022. He was interested in returning to Cameroon but missed out on the position.

The 62-year-old has significant experience in African football, having guided Cameroon to a third-place finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
