“Gernot Rohr Is One Of The Worst Coaches In Nigeria Football” – Former Everton Striker

By Amaechi Agbo

Former striker of English Premiership League side, Everton, Yakubu Aiyegbeni has accused Super Eagles Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr being one of the worst coaches in the history of Nigeria football.

The Former Super Eagles striker who missed a remarkable ‘open goal’ in 2010 World Cup against South Korea in South Africa said Rohr is not good enough for the Super Eagles adding that “enough is enough.”

Nigeria was unable to win any of her four matches she played in 2020 after losing 1-0 against Algeria and recording a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in two high profile friendly matches played in October.

The team also squandered a 4-0 lead against Sierra Leone in the first leg of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier to draw 4-4 and played out a goalless draw in return leg in Freetown on Tuesday.

Despite the team still topping their Group L with 8 points, a point better than second-placed Benin Republic, Aiyegbeni believes Rohr has no clue on how to manage the team

“Our football is getting worse every day. When I was there, people criticise us, but we’re way better than these ones.

“The coach is not good enough, no clue. Gernot Rohr is one of the worst coaches in our history. He is not good enough,” Aiyegbeni started.

Rohr assumed the role of Super Eagles head coach in 2016, and within this period he has led the team to the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria finishing third in the latter competition.

While those results may be excused, the Super Eagles failure to beat Sierra Leone in their doubleheader Africa cup of Nations qualifier has put Rohr under fire.

“The coach is not good enough, let him go,” the former Super Eagles striker said in a phone interview with Lagos Talks.

“Some of the boys are not good enough, I don’t know where they are bringing them from. Who is inviting these players?”

Rohr signed a renewed two-and-a-half-year contract with the Nigeria Football federation in May this year despite criticisms against the move by football stakeholders and analysts.
