In what is shaping up to be one of the most compelling underdog stories of the 2026/2027 CAF Confederation Cup, Nigeria’s Federation Cup champions, El-Kanemi Warriors are set to host Moroccan powerhouse Raja Casablanca. The highly anticipated first-leg clash of the second preliminary round takes place at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne on Sunday.
For the Maiduguri-based Desert Warriors, this match represents a monumental step up in class. Having earned their continental spot by winning Nigeria’s President Federation Cup, El-Kanemi navigated past Guinea-Bissau’s UDIB with a 3-1 aggregate victory in the first round. A resounding 3-0 victory in the home leg—powered by a brace from Nnamdi Mejuobi—proved enough to absorb a narrow 1-0 defeat in Bissau. Now, they face a completely different proposition in Raja, a club decorated with multiple African titles and vast continental experience.
Despite the staggering disparity in budgets, pedigree, and infrastructure, the camp of the Nigerian side remains fiercely defiant. El-Kanemi Warriors’ technical adviser, Emmanuel King, did not mince words when addressing the media.

“Raja are favorites. They have more experience in Africa, more titles, a bigger budget. Nobody will argue that,” King admitted. “But football is not played on paper; it is played on the pitch. Raja are living on past glory in the same way Enyimba of Aba once did. If I didn’t believe we could overcome them, I wouldn’t be here. The plan is clear: be strong in Ikenne, get a good result at home, and go to Casablanca with belief.”
Echoing this confidence, club chairman Waziri Isah assured fans that the team is not intimidated. “We have no problem with Raja Casablanca. We are waiting for the time, and we are prepared,” Isah stated from the club’s camp, where massive improvements in player welfare and a booming youth development program have rejuvenated the squad’s morale.
While El-Kanemi boasts a relatively young squad assembled just months ago under heavy economic constraints, their unity and disciplined defensive structure will be tested. Borno State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Comrade Saina Buba, visited the team camp to reinforce messages of tactical discipline and unity before they made the trip down south to Ogun State.
On the other side, Raja Casablanca enters the tie with a significant logistical and roster headache. According to reports filtering out of Morocco, the Green Eagles will be missing five key players due to registration and injury issues. Having been exempted from the first round, this will be Raja’s opening bow in this season’s tournament. The absence of key personnel presents a golden opportunity for El-Kanemi to strike early and secure an advantage before dealing with the hostile atmosphere of Casablanca.
With the away-goals rule and aggregate consistency being vital in CAF competitions, the mathematical imperative for El-Kanemi Warriors is clear: keep a clean sheet at home and find a way past the Moroccan defense.
If Raja manages to navigate the five-player deficit and secure a positive result in Nigeria, they will be heavy favorites to complete the job at the Stade Mohammed V. However, as Coach King noted, ninety minutes of football under the scorching Nigerian sun can completely rewrite scripts. A place in the lucrative group stage awaits the aggregate winner, making this a high-stakes chess match between two clubs with vastly contrasting realities.
The first leg will hold at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State on Sunday while the return leg will hold on Friday, Octobed 23rd at the Stade Mohammed V Stadium
