Nigeria’s Super Falcons’ campaign at the on-going 2024 Olympic Games women’s Football event appears to have headed to premature end following their 1-0 loss against world Champions, Spain.

The Nigerians who had earlier lost with similar scoreline against Brazil in their opening Group C match on Thursday had a an improved performance against the best female football team in the world, but a momentary loss of concentration cost the Falcons’ dearly

Alexia Putellas’ 85th minute strike was all that was needed to secure the three points for the Spaniards.

The defeat leaves Falcons panting for breathing as their hope of progressing into the last 8 now hangs in the balance.

Spain leads the group with 6 points and have already booked their place in the quarter-final but Super Falcons are bottom of the group with zero point and a deficient of two goals.

However, the Randy Waldrum led women can still sneak into the last 8 but they must beat Japan with 3-0 in their final group match and hope that Brazil loses 2-0 against Spain.

It is indeed a tall order for the ladies but nothing is impossible in football.

Nigeria football followers have criticised the Nigeria Football Federation and the ministry of sports for not starting preparations for the Olympics early enough.

Super Falcons were in camp for less than three weeks and played only a single warm up match against Canada before they faced Brazil.

In another result, fellow Africa representative, Zambia Blew up their 5-2 lead in the second half to lose 5-6 against Australia. The Zambians also face similar situation like the Falcons.
