Organisers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will distribute 150,000 condoms in the athletes’ village this summer but will encourage athletes not to use them.

The Games will be subject to strict coronavirus protocols which will see no international fans in attendance and will limit social mixing between athletes.

Condoms have been distributed as tradition since 1988 in Seoul in order to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS

“The distribution of condoms is not for use at the athletes’ village, but to have athletes take them back to their home countries to raise awareness [of HIV and AIDS],” Olympic organisers told Reuters.

IOC Vice President John Coates arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday, the same day that organisers and the International Olympic Committee were set to roll out the third and final edition of their so-called Playbooks.
