The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has denied having knowledge of the burial ceremonies of former U-23 captain, Isaac Promise adding that they would not have attended the event uniformed, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.
Report emerged Thursday that the federation as well as teammates of the former Flying Eagles captain did not show up during his burial on December 14, 2019 in Imo State.
A relative of the deceased former U-17 player lamented that despite sending the programme of event to the federation, they did not send a representative neither did any of his ex-teammates show up during the low-key burial.
“We sent out the programme in December, but there was no representative from the football community,” a family member was quoted.
“Imagine a former captain of Nigeria and there was no NFF representatives among the audience, and not even a former teammate.
“This is another lesson for footballers, you are only important when you are actively involved in the game because no one cares after your career is over.”
However, Reacting on a Whatsapp group after tagging the story published by Bestchoicesports.com.ng, NFF Secretary-General, Mohammed Sanusi has come out to explain that although the federation was in touch with late Promise’s wife who informed the Glass House about the challenges she was facing with the family regarding her late husband’s burial, he claimed that the federation was not aware of the burial programmes, hence they did not send a representative.
Mr Sanusi who described the story as ‘false’ said “let us be fair in our judgement of people.”
“People are very good in propagating false. People who do not have information on an issue will be talking and misleading others. NFF got to knoe (Sic) through Late Promise wife the problem she was having with his family concerning his burial.
“NFF President directed me to send a letter to the Chairman of Imo State FA, his (Sic) is on this forum, requesting him to go and intervene, which he did. The wife even called to express her appreciation. That was the last we had from them. We never new (Sic) anything about the burial arrangements. So can we participate in what we were not aware? Please let us be fair in our judgement of people,” he said.
Promise is survived by his wife Kate and three children and he was the captain of the Nigeria side that won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he also represented Nigeria at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels.
He scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Egypt in the final of 2015 Africa U-20 Championship to help Nigeria win the prestigious trophy in Benin.
