2019/20 NWFL Set Aside, Not Cancelled – Falode
By Our Correspondent
The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, Mrs Aisha Falode has debunked media reports that the 2019/20 season of the women domestic league has been cancelled, Bestchoicesports.com.ng understands
Mrs Falode stated this while featuring on the BCOS TV sports programme on Friday.
She explained that the NWFL for 2019/20 season was never held as the league had not begun before Covid 19 pandemic grounded all sporting activities in Nigeria.
“This season’s NWFL was not cancelled. How can we cancel something which has not been held?”, the head of the body running Nigeria’s women football league asked rhetorically.
“The women league was scheduled to hold between March and July this year. But Covid 19 has stopped all sporting activities in Nigeria before the league started”, the NWFL Chairperson stated.
The Ibadan born football administrator explained further that since football was yet to resume because of the lingering pandemic, NWFL Congress resolved to set aside the yet to be held women’s domestic league for the belated 2019/20 season and plan for next season.
“So the Nigeria Women Football League for 2019/20 was not cancelled. It was just set aside”, Falode asserted.
The NWFL Chairperson however disclosed that some games will still be played this year, as soon as the pandemic ceases, to allow for emergence of the nation’s flag bearers for the maiden edition of the newly introduced Women version of CAF Champions League, which will commence next year.
The Nigeria Football Federation announced Friday that the yet-to-commence NWFL 2019/2020 season was aborted.
- Adding that “The NWFL 2020/2021 to start from September/October 2020 and end May 2021 subject to the full reopening of the country and the approval of the health authorities.”
