CAF Increases AFCON Prize Money Ahead Of Opening Match On Sunday

As the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON opening match gets underway on Sunday in Cameroon, Africa’s football governing body, the Confederation of Africa Football, CAF have announced upward review of prize money for the tournament, www.bestchoicesports.com.ng can report

Arising from Executive Committee meeting on Friday, CAF announced a $1.850m increment in the prize monies for the competition

The continent’s football umpire said that the new prize adjustment takes immediately effect from the Cameroon tournament

The decision was taken at Friday’s Executive Committee meeting chaired by President, Dr Patrice Motsepe in Douala, Cameroon.

A release by CAF noted that “The increase is in line with CAF’s commitment to reward merit performance and enhance the status of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, and will be in effect in the upcoming edition that will kick-off at Olembe Stadium, Yaoundé on 09 January 2022.”

The new Africa Cup of Nations Prize Monies are as follow:

Winner: $5 million (an increase of $500 000)

Runner-up: $2.75 million (an increase of $250 000)

Semi-Finalists: $2.2 million (an increase of $200 000)

Quarter-Finalists: $1.175 million (an increase of $175 000)

This represents a total increase in the Africa Cup of Nations prize money of $1.850m.

Defending champions, Algeria got $4.5 million prize money for their victory in the 32nd edition held in Egypt two years ago.
