West African football witnessed a night of seismic shocks in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification round, as continental powerhouses Nigeria and Ghana both suffered disastrous defeats on Tuesday.

​The Super Eagles of Nigeria were soundly beaten 3–0 away by Guinea-Bissau, while Ghana’s Black Stars collapsed at home in Accra, falling 4–2 to a relentless Gambia side.

​Guinea-Bissau delivered a masterclass in clinical counter-attacking football to comfortably dispatch three-time African champions Nigeria 3–0 at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro.

​The hosts set the tone early in the first half, breaking through Nigeria’s defense to take a 1–0 lead into the halftime break. As Nigeria pushed forward in the second half to find an equalizer, Guinea-Bissau exploited the gaps at the back, striking twice more to complete a stunning three-goal margin.

​The victory moves Guinea-Bissau to the top of Group L, leaving Nigeria’s qualifying campaign in a delicate position as they fight for the sole non-host qualification spot alongside Madagascar.

In the other Group L match, Madagascar and Tanzania played out a 1-1 draw.

​In Accra, Ghana’s miserable qualifying run continued as they were humbled 4–2 by Gambia in a wild Group C encounter.
​The match got off to an explosive start, with both sides trading blows in a breathless 2–2 first half.

However, Gambia dominated the second period, outworking the Black Stars’ backline to score two unanswered goals and claim a historic away victory.
​The result extends Ghana’s winless run in AFCON qualifiers and sparks serious concerns over their qualification prospects heading into the remaining group fixtures.

Beyond the upsets suffered by Nigeria and Ghana, Matchday 2 of the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers produced a flurry of decisive wins, commanding performances, and dramatic comebacks across the continent on Tuesday, September 29.

​Egypt & Morocco Deliver Statements

The Pharaohs produced the most dominant performance of the day in Juba. Recovering emphatically from an opening draw against Angola, Egypt stormed to a 5–0 victory headlined by a brace from Omar Marmoush.

​The Atlas Lions of Morocco maintained their perfect start to the qualifying campaign. Controlling the tempo throughout, Morocco sealed a comfortable 2–0 away victory to sit firmly atop Group A with six points.

​Ethiopia 0–1 Senegal (Group J): The Teranga Lions secured a vital away win courtesy of an early strike from Ibrahim Mbaye. The 1–0 result marked the first official victory under head coach Patrick Vieira.

Algeria showed resilience after falling behind early away to Burundi. The Desert Warriors fought back to claim a 2–2 draw, keeping their unbeaten qualifying record intact.

In one of Tuesday’s most explosive second-half displays, Mozambique blew away Sudan with four goals to earn a 4–1 home triumph, strengthening their qualifying ambitions in Group J.

Comoros picked up their first win of the campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 home victory over Namibia.
