The University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina’s largest and most prestigious academic institution, has announced it will confer its highest honor, the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa, upon football icon Lionel Messi.
The unanimous decision by the university’s Superior Council recognizes Messi not only for his extraordinary athletic achievements—including leading Argentina to World Cup victory—but also for his global impact as a cultural ambassador, philanthropist, and symbol of perseverance for the nation.

The official ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, directly ahead of Argentina’s international match against Benin at the Monumental Stadium. The timing adds significant emotional weight to the occasion, as the fixture will serve as Messi’s formal farewell match in front of his home supporters.
”Messi himself has been a goodwill ambassador who introduced Argentina to the world,” stated UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi. “He is an exemplary ambassador who embodies humility and perseverance and who represents Argentine popular culture and national identity.”
Reflecting on his decision to close his international career, Messi previously stated, “I have given everything to the Argentine national team,” adding that he felt confident stepping aside because “there are excellent young players” ready to take the mantle.
In an official statement regarding the tribute, UBA authorities highlighted his character and impact:
”The career of Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini constitutes an example of excellence, perseverance, humility, and ethical conduct. His legacy transcends sport, making him a fitting recipient of our highest academic distinction.”
The Doctor Honoris Causa is reserved for individuals who have made monumental contributions to society, culture, or science. Messi joins a distinguished list of previous UBA honorees that includes Nobel laureates, world leaders, and prominent literary figures.
For the 39-year-old captain, the degree adds a unique academic tribute to an unprecedented career that includes eight Ballon d’Or awards, two Copa América titles, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy. Tuesday’s presentation promises to be an emotional double-header for Argentine fans, honoring Messi’s legendary career both on the pitch and across the nation’s broader cultural landscape.
