Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners have officially completed the signing of highly-rated Nigerian U-20 international goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar.

The 18-year-old shot-stopper arrives in Gosford, New South Wales, from top-tier Lagos-based academy Mavlon FC, putting pen to paper on his first professional European-style contract ahead of the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League Men season.

Abubakar shot to continental prominence during the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. Serving primarily as the Flying Eagles’ third-choice goalkeeper, he etched his name into Nigerian football folklore during the tournament’s high-stakes third-place playoff match against the host nation, Egypt.

With the game locked at 1-1 deep into stoppage time, tactical maneuvers saw Abubakar introduced in the 94th minute specifically for the impending penalty shootout. The gamble paid off spectacularly: the teenager displayed nerves of steel to save two Egyptian spot-kicks, guiding Nigeria to a 4-1 shootout victory and securing the tournament’s bronze medal.

Beyond his headline-grabbing performance in North Africa, Abubakar possesses an imposing physical frame combined with modern goalkeeping technical traits, including a rare ability to be equally comfortable utilizing both feet for distribution out of the back.

The club also confirmed the transfer deal in a statement on its website and reckons his international exprposure would come handy for the club in the new season.

“The Central Coast Mariners are pleased to announce the signing of highly rated Nigerian goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar, with the 18-year-old joining the club for the next chapter of his young career.

“Abubakar arrives on the Central Coast having already represented his country at youth international level, earning selection for Nigeria’s U20 Flying Eagles.

“Despite his young age, the goalkeeper has already experienced the pressure of international tournament football.

“Abubakar was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt and produced a memorable contribution in the third-place playoff against the host nation,” the club said.

The transfer aligns with the Mariners’ youth development strategy under new owners Total Soccer Growth Holdings (TSG). Expressing enthusiasm for the move, Abubakar voiced his readiness to embrace the Australian challenge and work hard to reward the club’s supporters (readers can view his full remarks in the official announcement).

Abubakar has arrived in Australia and joins the squad immediately ahead of their F3 Derby opener against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday, October 17.
