The 3rd Governor Dickson Wrestling Classic got underway on Tuesday in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital with about 300 wrestlers and officials from over 20 states and clubs across the country taking part, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report

The atmosphere was electric at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex as fans and spectators drummed, danced and cheered the student and cadet wrestlers who took to the mats first.

Medical screening and weigh-in for the wrestlers in other categories such as the Graeco Roman, freestyle and women continues as more participants arrive in Yenagoa for the competition in which national champions will emerge and the nation’s representatives to the 12th Africa Games in Morocco later this year and the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan in September will be chosen.

Meanwhile, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Dr. Daniel Igali says the period for the 3rd Governor Dickson Classics has been extended by two days.

Answering questions from Sports Journalists on the sidelines of the event, he stated that the competition which began on Tuesday was initially scheduled to climax on Sunday but will now run till next week with the closing ceremony billed for Monday.

Igali said the Governor of the State wants to be present in the closing ceremony, hence the extension of the competition by two days.

He also took time to explain a disagreement in the outcome of one of the fights in which Video recording was relied on to address the situation.

Action continues tomorrow at the Wrestling Classics with medical examination, weigh in and qualification rounds as the Senior Wrestlers take to the mats in Graeco Roman 55 Kilogram and 87kg, Freestyle 61kg and 92 kg, women 53kg and freestyle 72kg and 77kg, women 55kg and 76kg in the afternoon from Noon.
