Lampard’s 5 Biggest Tasks As Chelsea Manager
Frank Lampard is facing the biggest job of his life after completing an emotional return to Stamford Bridge as head coach
Chelsea icon Lampard is coming ‘home’ and must cope with the sale of their best player, a transfer ban and more
The Chelsea legend, with just one season in management under his belt, is under no illusions that he must deliver success despite the fact they have just sold star player Eden Hazard and are under a two-window transfer ban so cannot replace him.
Owner Roman Abramovich has made a habit of hiring and firing managers on a regular basis, and even Lampard’s status as a club hero will not give him immunity.
So, here is a look at what the 41-year-old needs to do this summer, and what is already in his inbox at the training ground…
Give Youth A Chance
This is a given because Lampard cannot make any signings. Finally, Chelsea’s many highly-promising academy graduates might actually get a first-team chance.
A big part of Lampard’s appeal was the way he blooded youngsters during his time at Derby, as loan signings Mason Mount, borrowed from Chelsea, and Harry Wilson flourished with opportunities and the manager’s faith.
Mount has now returned to the Blues and is seen as a big prospect for the future. Along with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi (once fit after his achilles injury), he will get the sort of chances denied under previous bosses.
It is a case of needs-must for Lampard, but it will also be a fascinating experiment – for years, Chelsea managers have complained they do not have time to develop young players.
Now it is a necessity.
Sort Out Their Playing Style
If you were an outsider looking in, it was always difficult to understand why Maurizio Sarri did not work out in his sole season at Chelsea. Third-place finish in the league, back in the Champions League, and a European trophy. Not bad.
Lampard must find a way of playing as successful as Sarri’s, but more popular with the fans
But one of the key reasons Chelsea fans never took to Sarri was very simple: “Sarriball”.
It was very one-dimensional, could be frustrating, and the players (let alone the fans) struggled to buy into Sarri’s methods. Add a regimented approach to substitutions on top, and you have a big problem.
Lampard is onto an instant winner here because he was an attack-minded midfielder as a player, enjoys open and expansive football and wants to entertain.
Whisper it — they might even dump Jorginho.
REPLACE THE BRILLIANT EDEN HAZARD
This is a thankless task.
Hazard was not only Chelsea’s best player, he was arguably the best player in the whole Premier League. His move to Real Madrid may help establish him as one of the best in the world game, now that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are both well into their 30s.
Chelsea are beginning a transfer ban just as they sell best player Hazard
Knowing a transfer ban was likely, the Blues splashed out on Christian Pulisic in January, then loaned him back to Borussia Dortmund for the rest of the season. Now he will get his chance to shine.
The USA international had stalled at Dortmund though, and it may be Chelsea have to become less dependent on one player and share the Hazard role out among gifted stars such as Willian, rising star Hudson-Odoi and the rest.
Find A Striker They Can Count On
This could be the toughest task of them all.
The Blues have been through a few in recent times, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Alvaro Morata both flopping badly. Olivier Giroud is still at the club and won the World Cup last summer, but it is hard to know if he will be first choice.
Therefore, Lampard might have to look at Tammy Abraham and see whether the England Under-21 striker is good enough to be Chelsea’s main man after loan spells at Bristol City and Aston Villa in the Championship and top-flight Swansea.
Abraham’s goals just helped get Villa promoted but he has questions to answer as a top-flight player
The jury is out.
Chelsea have also given Atletico Madrid an ultimatum that they must make Morata’s loan permanent or they will recall him for the new season.
Lampard must hope Abraham comes good.
Go From Club Legend To Successful Manager
It has been all the rage.
Kenny Dalglish, Zinedine Zidane and Pep Guardiola all have one thing in common – they earned legendary status as players, then enjoyed glorious success when they became managers of one of their former clubs.
Fewer players get the chance to go back these days, which is why Lampard’s return to Chelsea is so special.
Lampard’s beloved status at Chelsea will surely buy him time if things get rough
He is one of the club’s best players of all time, which will earn him some credit and patience with Chelsea fans — and that could be vital in what will be a difficult season. He will also enjoy a special relationship with the supporters from day one.
But the only way to maintain that legendary status is to deliver success, and also resist the familiar trap of always harping back to the past, and trying to live up to impossible standards.
