Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua said they will punish Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo over a post on social media, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.

Though the post has since been deleted, Shanghai Shenhua management and fans were irked by the social media message put up by Ighalo.

The 30-year-old has not played for Shanghai Shenhua in three months, no thanks to injury which was followed by his 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign where he suffered an injury in the third place match against Tunisia.

Ighalo is now recovering in Barcelona, and his club want him to focus on his rehabilitation.

“This incident caused great concern to domestic media and fans, causing serious adverse social impact,” Shenhua said in a statement on the Twitter-like Weibo.

Shenhua, who recovered from a poor opening half of the Chinese Super League season and now sit 12th of 16 teams, added that they “attached great importance to this matter.

“(The club) criticised and educated Ighalo immediately and asked him to put all his energy into his rehabilitation and the club.”

Ighalo will be “punished according to the team’s regulations”, the statement said, without giving specifics.

He scored five goals for the Super Eagles at the AFCON 2019 to emerge overall top scorer of the tournament.
