You Cannot Depend Only On Foreign Players To Build A National Team – Joe Erico Tells Rohr
As the Super Eagles square up against Ukraine in an international friendly on the 10th of September, former assistant coach of the side, Joe Erico has advised the team’s coach, Gernot Rohr to infuse local players into the team if he really wants to build a brand for the country, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.
Joe Erico, fondly called JogoBonito explained that with the exclusion of local players from the team, the coach risks not building a brand for the nation as well as killing the morals of the local based player who will feel alienated from the Eagles.
He believes that utilizing local players will encourage a healthy selection competition for call-ups.
“New players can come in now because they are here and there. One million and one of them so you cannot just depend on the old ones regularly”.
“If the young ones come in and fight for a shirt, there is nothing wrong with that, but that is how it is supposed to be anyways,” the former goalkeeper coach told Brila.
Erico concluding his reasoning with the argument that Gernot Rohr’s selection of NPFL talent will inspire the footballers to work towards the goal of wearing the green shirt.
“A reasonable coach should be able to try as much as possible to infuse the home-based players to encourage them to work harder and to do more and giving them an opportunity. I think it’s very important the coach should look inwards too,” he concluded.
