Super Falcons legend Mercy Akide-Udoh wins Coach of the Year award in United State America, Bestchoicesports.com.ng understands.

The 43-year-old Port Harcourt-born was named Regent University Athletic Department’s Coach of the Year after she just completed her first season as head coach of the university’s women’s soccer program, was a unanimous choice for the award, voted for by all the coaches of the Virginia Beach-based varsity in the United States, per report

Samuel Botta said the varsity’s athletics director while announcing the award: “When we were voting for this award, everyone who sent in their vote was unanimous that it could only go to one person, Mercy,” said Samuel Botta.

“Mercy has been a blessing to our program and we are lucky to have her.”

In her first season coaching the program, Akide-Udoh took the team from zero wins in their first season, to five wins.

Akide-Udoh said as she received her award. “This is such an unexpected honour for me.

“I will like to thank everyone who voted and also thanks to my players who have made this such an enjoyable time for me here.”

She also worked as the co-Director of Youth Development and for Beach FC in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 2013 before joining the coaching staff of Virginia Rush Soccer Club, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Akide-Udoh, who played for Nigeria in three FIFA Women’s World Cups and also helped the Super Falcons to three African Women Championships (AWC) titles in 1998, 2000 and 2002, was named the first African Women Footballer of the Year in 2001.

In 2005, she was named by FIFA as one of its 15 Ambassadors for Women Football.
