Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory by defeating Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The historic triumph on July 3, 2026 advances the Pharaohs to the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time since 1934.

The atmosphere inside the Texas stadium was electric. Egypt, under the tactical guidance of head coach Hossam Hassan, received a massive pre-match boost when talisman Mohamed Salah was declared fit to start.

The Pharaohs capitalized on their early momentum in the 13th minute. Karim Hafez delivered a pinpoint cross deep into the Australian box, finding midfielder Emam Ashour. Ashour darted past the defense and expertly headed the ball into the back of the net, breaking out a joyous celebration to give Egypt a 1-0 lead.

As the match progressed, Australia’s Socceroos grew into the game. Their physical presence, anchored by 6’6″ captain Harry Souttar, began to pressure the Egyptian backline. In the 55th minute, the pressure paid off in an unexpected fashion. Australia’s Aiden O’Neill whipped a dangerous ball into the box from a set piece. In an attempt to clear the danger, Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany accidentally deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper, Mostafa Shobeir.

The final minutes of regular time turned into a showcase of spectacular goalkeeping. In the 88th minute, Egypt’s Ramy Rabia launched a powerful, goal-bound header. Just as Egyptian fans began to celebrate, Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach pulled off an astonishing, fingertips-over-the-bar save to force extra time.

Despite weary legs and relentless pressing from both sides in the additional 30 minutes, neither team could break the deadlock. With only one minute remaining in extra time, Australian coach Tony Popovich made a high-stakes tactical gamble. He subbed off the brilliant Patrick Beach to bring on veteran penalty-specialist goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

The gamble, however, did not unfold as planned as Australia’s Harry Souttar missed his opening attempt. Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber confidently blasted his shot past Ryan. Jackson Irvine converted for Australia. Ramy Rabia coolly restored Egypt’s lead. In Round 3, Awer Mabil scored for the Socceroos. Mohamed Salah stepped up and cheekily slotted his penalty straight down the middle to make it 3-2 for Egypt. In the Round 4, 18-year-old Australian prodigy Lucas Herrington struck his shot directly off the crossbar. With the weight of a nation on his shoulders, Egyptian defender Hossam Abdelmaguid stepped up to the spot. He buried his strike into the bottom-left corner, sending Ryan the wrong way.

Abdelmaguid’s successful strike ignited wild celebrations among the players and traveling fans. It marked Egypt’s first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match. The Pharaohs have officially punched their ticket to the Round of 16, where they will face either Cape Verde or the defending champions, Argentina.

Egypt became the second African nation to reach the last 16 after Morocco grabbed their ticked earlier in the week following their victory against the Netherlands.

Senegal, DR Congo,Ivory Coast and Algeria all failed to progress eyond the Round of 32.
