There are indications that Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to make Carlos Queiroz to remain at the helm of Black Stars after the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation agreed to extend the Portuguese tactician’s stay following the expiration of his initial four-month contract.

The decision was reached after consultations between the GFA and the Sports Ministry in the aftermath of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, with both parties concluding that Queiroz is the ideal coach to lead the Black Stars into a new era.

The 73-year-old is expected to sign a two-year contract, with his primary objective being to end Ghana’s long wait for continental success by winning the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars have not lifted Africa’s most prestigious football trophy since their triumph in Libya in 1982, making the quest to reclaim the title a national priority.

Queiroz was appointed on a short-term basis ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and made an immediate impact, guiding Ghana beyond the group stage before their journey ended in the Round of 32.

Although the Black Stars fell short of a deeper run, Queiroz earned widespread praise for instilling tactical discipline, defensive organisation and professionalism within the squad.

His performances convinced football authorities that continuity offers the best path toward sustained success.

One of the most experienced coaches in international football, Queiroz has previously managed Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar and South Africa, while also serving as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United.

His wealth of experience at both FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments is viewed as a major asset as Ghana prepares for the next cycle of international competitions.

Under the proposed new deal, Queiroz will oversee Ghana’s preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and other international assignments as the Black Stars seek to re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite.

The contract extension is also expected to bring much-needed stability to the national team after years of managerial changes, providing a solid foundation for long-term development.

An official announcement confirming Queiroz’s new contract is expected in the coming days, with both the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation confident that the veteran coach can lead the Black Stars back to the summit of African football.
