Egypt is considering a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirming that discussions are underway over a potential candidature for the continent’s flagship football tournament.

EFA board member Hamada El-Sherbiny disclosed that the federation is carefully assessing the feasibility of submitting an official bid, with consultations involving relevant government institutions and the country’s political leadership.

Speaking in an interview with Mega FM, El-Sherbiny said the authorities remain fully committed to supporting the growth of sport in Egypt and are evaluating the country’s readiness to stage another major international competition.

“Egypt is capable of organizing any tournament, whether it’s the Africa Cup of Nations, the FIFA World Cup or the FIFA Futsal World Cup,” El-Sherbiny said. “At this moment, however, hosting the 2028 AFCON is our top priority.”

He revealed that the possibility of hosting the tournament featured prominently during recent EFA board meetings, where members expressed confidence in Egypt’s ability to deliver a world-class competition, citing the country’s modern stadiums, sports infrastructure and extensive experience in staging major sporting events.

El-Sherbiny also underscored the emotional bond between the national team and its supporters, describing the happiness of Egyptian football fans as the federation’s greatest source of inspiration.

“The joy of the people is our greatest motivation to continue working even harder,” he said.

Egypt has previously hosted the Africa Cup of Nations on several occasions and is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most experienced organisers of major football tournaments.

A formal decision on whether the country will submit a bid for the 2028 edition is expected after the EFA concludes its consultations with the relevant stakeholders.
